How To Win Free Stuff Tying Flies And Drinking Beer

Once you reach a certain level in your fly fishing, you’re going to want to start tying up your own flies. Whether they turn out fishable or not isn’t the point, the reason to tie is to add another layer of fun to your fly fishing.

One of the cool kids on the block that are doing big things to push fly tying to the forefront of the fishing community is Pig Farm Ink. With a few bad tattoos on their arm and a fish full of materials, the masterminds behind the pig are hosting fly tying competitions called, Iron Fly, blending fly tying with the same setup as the Food Network’s Iron Chef tv show.

With a bunch of materials to tie up a fly, and one random, weird material that you have to incorporate, tyers are challenged to use their skill and creativity to whip up something they can still catch fish with. The winners get a bunch of cool prizes, but at the end of the day it’s still all about meeting up with a few like-minded fishing folks, having a (few) cold ones and having a blast.

We’re down with what these group of friends are up to, so we’re partnering with Pig Farm Ink to make sure all of their events across the country are supplied with fly tying kits. The mystery ingredient? That’ll still be sourced by Pig Farm, because we don’t have a connection for locally sourced dog hair, trash, and whatever weird stuff they challenge their event participants with.

We just sent a box of fly tying kits (and a pile of stickers, obviously) to the Pig Farm Ink folks for their upcoming Anchorage, Alaska event on Sept 15th, but there are other events that you can sign up for that might be close to your home waters. Click here to check out the calendar of Iron Fly events on the Pig Farm Ink website and see if there’s an event happening near you. With over 40 events spread throughout the country this season, there’s more than a good chance that you’ll be able to sign up.

Can’t make it to the Anchorage, Alaska event but still want the chance to try fly tying on your own? Sign up for a Postfly fly tying box now and start whipping up masterpieces of your own.
