Ask any fly fisherman and they’ll tell you that the king of summer flies is the hopper. Fat, juicy hoppers are one of the very few patterns that are enough to draw a trout outside of the shade. In July’s fly tying kit box, we featured the perfect foam hopper pattern that will let you tie them up quick and hit the water right now.
Learn how to tie the foam hopper with the video below, and if that’s not enough then check out the instructions featured in our monthly insert that will break it down step by step.

Just a quick question: what’s the trick on getting the overwing to conform to the foam body so nicely like in the pre-tied version in the box?
Thanks
Jeff
It’s tricky, but pinching the feather at the base as you place it over the foam body can help to shape it how it is on the fly in the box. Also, voodoo black magic helps.
Thanks. I’ll go pick up some black magic today. Also – sorry about the duplicate comment…Internet browser timed out.
Hey guys
What’s the trick to getting the overwing to sit so nicely on the foam body like in the pre-tied version in the box?
Thanks
Jeff
