6 Questions With Postfly Ambassador Ryan Scavo

Catching fish on the fly all season long takes dedication and our Ambassador profile series is taking a look at the lives of the anglers that are out there day in and day out, making it happen. intro Postfly Ambassador Ryan Scavo (@ryoutside) calls the rivers and mountains of Colorado home, catching trout with her family and exploring as much of the wild as she can. Use her lessons to start catching like a pro.
Postfly: What got you into fly fishing in the first place?
Ryan Scavo: Though I hate to admit it, a boy. I started out spin fishing and my boyfriend at the time challenged me to try to cast his fly rod. Needless to say, after landing a nice rainbow trout, I was hooked. And I ended up marrying him 🙂
PFB: How has your life changed since starting to fly fish?
RS: I think my life has changed in two really incredible ways. First, my fear of water has morphed into a true appreciation and respect. I no longer get nervous walking into hip-deep waters. I get excited and down right stoked thinking of the potential!
Second, I’ve visited places I never thought I would because I wanted to fish the waters nearby. I’ve eaten burritos and drank beers in small towns I never knew existed in pursuit of trout and don’t think I’d have it any other way.

PFB: What does it mean to you to be called an ambassador to the sport?
RS: It means we have a responsibility to share the good word and encourage/inspire others to get out on the water. And especially for me, it means getting more women on the water!
PFB: What’s your favorite fish to chase on the fly?
RS: My go-to is trout – Rio Grande Cutthroat to be specific. They are elusive and gorgeous and I’m lucky enough to call their waters home. But, I want to go carping SO BAD and hooking into a giant tarpon is always fun, too 🙂
PFB: What’s the coolest trip you’ve taken this season? (So far)
RS: I was on a photo assignment this summer on La Jara Creek. The water was low, but I was still able to hook into several nice sized browns and rainbows. And the best part? Other than our group of 4, there wasn’t another person around. It was the perfect summer day and we had the water all to ourselves. Magical.

PFB: Where’s your next trip?
RS: Jackson Hole – We’re hitting Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks in mid-October. I visited both parks in 2013 when the government shutdown hit and had to cut the tour early. This time, I’m bringing my fly rod and I don’t think I could be any more stoked!!
