5 Signs You May Have Seasonal Affective Fishing Disorder (SAFD)

For many anglers, this time of year is a slow, cold and dark waiting period before their favorite fish show back up or their streams open. That is why we are highlighting a common disorder that occurs in anglers, Seasonal Affective Fishing Disorder (SAFD). So far, the only known cure is time on the water. This disorder effects anglers all across the planet, so here are 5 signs that you may have SAFD:

#1 – Your Youtube history is nothing but fly fishing videos

You took a look at your screentime on your phone and notice that you’re spending a lot of time watching youtube stoke reels of big fish. Or maybe your researching new fly patterns to tie up while you wait for your next opportunity to fish. Either way, this is a sure symptom of SAFD.

#2 – You’re having fishing dreams

Perhaps its a dream of a far off destination or a nightmare about the one that got away on your last trip, fishing has invaded your subconscious and taken over your dreams. The only known way to prevent this symptom is to make those dreams a reality.

#3 – You stare longingly at any body of water you drive past

All of us are guilty of this, staring out at an iced-up stream or waters devoid of the fish they will hold come summer and longing for the day that we can get out there. But every time you sneak glimpses of creeks you cross over on your way to work you’re reminded that you still have time to wait. Best way to cure this symptom? Spend your downtime filling your fly boxes or planning your next trip so you’re ready for the first opportunity you get to get back out there.

#4 – Your latest fishing story starts with  “A couple of weeks ago…”

We think the amount of time between fishing trips should be measured with days, not weeks. We start to notice the depression and compulsion to fly fish after just 7 days of not fishing. Once symptoms set in you only have a matter of days before full cabin fever sets in.

#5 – You know the exact number of days until the fishing season starts

Whether its the first trip out when migratory fish show back up or opening day of trout on your local streams, you’ve got the date marked in your calendar, hell, you probably already asked for days off from work. For me, the magic number is 54 days and counting…
