A lot of things come to mind when people talk about chasing bonefish on the fly. Along with the images of endless flats, turquoise water, and glimmering tails, come the slightly less exciting and relatable images of old rich guys shelling out big bucks for travel and high-end lodges. Maybe you are already a member of this demographic, in which case, good for you. We all aspire to be you, one day. In the meantime, for those of us who want to be well-acquainted with the sport by the time that we’ve “made it” to that point, there are ways to chase the silver ghost on a realistic budget. Here are seven tips to help get you out on the flat.

1. Google Maps

If you’re not already well acquainted with the platform, you need to be. Focus on latitudes closer to the equator, and areas that are not impossible to travel to. For reference, here’s what the world famous Abaco Lodge looks like from above.

2. Access

Make sure you’ll be able to rent a kayak or paddleboard. These will be key for accessing different flats and covering water.

3. Accommodations

There are three schools of thought here, depending on your location. Seedy Motel, Camping, or AirBnB. Each one comes with its own unique advantages and disadvantages. Dealers choice, but choose wisely now.

4. Be Prepared

Coolers, water bottles, bug spray, sunscreen, good flats booties are key (seriously, if you’re going to splurge on one thing, let it be your booties, your feet will thank you)

5. Rainy Day Activities

OK – ideally, it doesn’t rain. That being said, if it’s a long enough trip, chances are you’ll get blown out at least one afternoon. Or maybe you’ll be to sunburned to fish. Either way, bring games and books, you already spend too much time on the damn interwebs.

6. Homies

Because who else is going to play those games with you, snap your grip and grins, and call you out on your embellished fish tales?
