4 Patriotic Movies You Didn’t Know Involved Fly Fishing

The Patriot (2000)

Set during the Revolutionary War, this film mainly revolves around Benjamin Martin (Mel Gibson), rallying his fellow revolutionaries fighting the British. However, the scene most people forget about is when Benjamin (Gibson) sees a red-coat bee-lining for his honey hole. Benjamin drops his musket, grabs his 8 weight and leads the charge to take back the hole and kick out the high-holing British.

Independence Day (1996)

After defeating the alien invasion,  Capt. Steven Hiller (Will Smith) and David Levinson (Jeff Goldblum) grabbed their rods from the wreckage and went out for a quick dry fly session for some desert cutthroat. Welcome to Earth!

Red Dawn (1984)

During the height of the Russian occupation, the Wolverines resorted to fly fishing to provide for themselves while hiding out in the mountains of Colorado. Surviving off of land-locked stripers and tons of trout, the Wolverines were able to fight out the Soviets and reclaim their prized fishing grounds!

Iron Man 2

Tony developed this suit specifically to get to his favorite backcountry fishing spots without needing a helicopter or bush pilot. Utilizing cutting edge rod tube designs, he was able to carry 3 rods and quickly deploy a retractable net from his arms. Even superheroes need a day off to unwind on the creek.

The list is OK but you’ve missed the great one : A River Runs Through It.
“The story about two sons of a stern minister — one reserved, one rebellious — growing up in rural Montana while devoted to fly fishing.”
Yes – the patriot is best one. But when it comes with fly fishing – “A River Runs Through It. ” is more focused.
Anyway – thanks for the list.

We regard “A River Runs Through It” to be the greatest fly fishing film of all time, and didn’t want to mix it in with this humor and parody! 😉 Thanks for reading and commenting!

Finally somebody who also recognizes my favorite parts from these movies! People always looked bewildered when I tell them about these parts.
